Couture Line House of Chanel French
Designer Karl Lagerfeld French, born Germany

fall/winter 2012–13
Not on view
This suit is one of Karl Lagerfeld’s reinterpretations of Chanel’s iconic tweed suits of the 1950s and 1960s. Through intricate hand embroidery, Lagerfeld re-created the appearance of a checked tweed, replicating that fabric’s irregular texture with thick wool yarns and carefully applied rows of beads. The pattern of beading outlining the hemlines and cuffs echoes the gilt chain traditionally applied along the inside hem of a Chanel suit to ensure a smooth line.
