The Return of the Parliament (Le Retour du Parlement)

ca. 1774
Not on view
The image glorifies the decision of Louis XVI in 1774 to reconstitute the Parliament of Paris by recalling the magistrates who had been arrested and exiled three years earlier. The scene is set on the Île de la Cité, in the medieval heart of the city. The location is the courtyard of the Hall of Justice (Palais de Justice), with Sainte-Chapelle, a royal chapel in the gothic style, on the left.
