The Deluge V

Deluge V provides an intimate view of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina from an artist who has spent much of his life in the Gulf Coast region. The viewer is positioned immediately within the space of a flooded New Orleans street. This open and direct perspective, along with Bates’s broad brushwork, underscores the urgency of the situation and offers a perspective that differs from the photojournalistic images that overwhelmed mass media in the days and years following the storm. Bates was compelled to address the natural disaster not only from an emotional, empathic standpoint, but also as a means of criticizing government agencies that failed to protect residents of historically African American neighborhoods.
