Drawing without paper 86/18

Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) Venezuelan, born Germany
1986
Not on view
Gego centered her groundbreaking practice on the line—whether drawn on paper or sculpted in three dimensions—and she was keenly attuned to how this elemental artistic gesture articulates form and animates space. The artist is best known for her Reticulárea—large net-like installations from the 1960s and 1970s made from interlaced wires and suspended in an environment. This Drawing without Paper is part of a series of the same name that distills these earlier interests while incorporating more varied materials. The work’s simple, modular form is further activated through the delicate shadows it casts on a nearby wall.
