Enthroned Buddha

17th–18th century
Not on view
The Buddha is seated in a mediation posture with his proper right hand reaching down to touch the earth, signaling his summoning of the earth goddess to witness his imminent spiritual awakening. This earth-touching gesture (bhumisparsamudra), infrequently represented in Indian Buddhist imagery, became the classic mode of representation of the Buddha in mainland Southeast Asia.
