Scheveningen Fisherwoman

1932
Not on view
Van den Berg made this drawing in the exact year, and plausibly on the very day, as the large drawing of a fisherman on view nearby. As in that sheet, he blended nostalgia and realism. The same kinds of boats and figures, rendered in a deliberately simplified manner, serve as a poignant backdrop to the fisherwoman looking into the distance, as if caught between past and future—or perhaps longing for one or the other. Here, the artist employed colored chalks to capture the details of her traditional regional garb.
