As one of the most prolific designers of the last quarter of the 20th century, Ralph Lauren has established himself as a stylist who adapts elements of the past to create a modern, truly American lifestyle and look. A look often based on the style, elegance and values of the British upper class. Lauren's spring 1984 collection was designed to evoke the romantic nostalgia of a 1930s African safari. This ensemble, a linen three-piece suit with matching shoes, is a rare complete example of the look. The designer's concepts for sportswear and home furnishings are often based on imagined characters and environments as in film. Lauren is said to have been influenced by costume designer Milena Canonero, who designed costumes for the 1985 film "Out of Africa", which further popularized the safari look.
