Evening coat
Department Store Knox American
Not on view
The unique construction of this evening coat incorporates a slitted sleeve that references 16th-century men's garments. The use of tassels and ornaments are examples of the popular interest in Orientalism at the time. The coat was made by Knox, an American company that was founded in New York City by Charles Knox in the 1830s. Known primarily for its men's hats, the company also made hats for women, as well as coats, canes, and watches.
