After the launch of Sputnik in 1957, the world became transfixed by space travel. The race began to see who could put a man on the moon first, America succeeding in 1969. Because of the importance of this technological advancement, interest in space and the future permeated into all factions of life. Fashion, especially, was affected by this new trend. Designers, such as Courrèges and Pierre Cardin were some of the first to promote body suits, white mini dresses, futuristic knee-high boots and helmet shaped hats, and it did not take long for the rest of the fashion world to follow. This hat designed by Galanos for his Fall 1965 collection is very much in vogue with the times. Extremely modern and stream-lined, it is a high-end adaptation of the space age headwear offered during this period.
