Marking: [1] crowned fleur-de-lis, 2 grains de remède, JAA, device a fleur-de-lis (maker's mark);
[2] reversed interlaced L's;
[3] crowned P

Note about marks:
This style of over-all flower enamelling on an engraved ground occurs on Parisian boxes exclusively in the 1750s. Mark [1] is not recorded for any box maker working at that period. A mark of the same description is recorded for J. A. Alazard who, however, became master only in 1787 and was not originally a box maker but a cuilleriste. There are several stylistic errors in this piece: 1) the molded projecting cover rim which interrupts the design; 2) the presence of a thumbpiece; 3) the presence of a foot rim. Further, both the palette and rendering of the enamelling are incompatible with 18th-century work. Neither mark [2], apparently intended for the date letter of 1786-7, nor mark [3], presumably meant for the crossed Ls of 1783–89, bears any resemblance to French marks of those dates.
