The New and the Old Dispensations

German, Cologne

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 520

This roundel visualizes verses 16 and 17 from the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Adam, as a representative of humankind, is placed at the center. To his left, Moses stands in front of scenes from the Old Testament, while Saint John to his right gestures toward passages from the New Testament, as if explaining these verses to Adam. The artisan colored the window yellow with silver stain, a silver-nitrate mixture painted on clear glass while cold and adhered with a second firing.
