Saint Peter as Pope

Probably woven under the direction of Bertrand François Dupont French

This banner diplays the patron saint of the parish of Saint Pierre at Chaillot, for which it was made. As Saint Pierre was the local church of the weavers of the Savonnerie manufactory, it is not surprising that the banner is execeuted in the knotted technique more usually associated with carpets and furnishing panels. The figure of the pope draws its inspiration from the seventeenth-century Roman papal tombs, while the background pattern imitates a damask fabric.
