Sugar box
Manufactory Vienna
Factory director Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier period Austrian
Not on view
Some wares made early in Du Paquier’s history reveal that the manufactory struggled to perfect firing and decoration. This sugar box has many firing flaws, including a warped lid and grit in the glaze; its decoration is also tentative, painted in the limited early palette. The casket form, which was produced in several sizes, was likely inspired by a silver model. The recumbent lion with a ragged mane is one of two lion-shaped finials made at Du Paquier.
