Onyx cameo fragment

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 166

The scene may represent an episode from the story of Proserpine (Gr. Persephone) and Pluto (Gr. Hades). Mythological scenes are rare on such large cameos; most of the surviving examples depict members of the Roman imperial family.
