Bronze handle of a vessel with Silenos mask

Etruscan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 170

These heavy, solid-cast handles were once attached to a stamnos, a large vessel frequently used by Etruscans during the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods for cremated remains. Each leaf-shaped attachment is decorated with a frontal Silenos head crowned by an elaborate floral wreath.
