[Lucia Moholy; Negative Print]
László Moholy-Nagy American, born Hungary
Not on view
In keeping with the climate of visual and technical experimentation that characterized the Bauhaus, the German design school where he taught, Moholy-Nagy printed this unusual close-up portrait of his wife, Lucia (1899-1989), as a negative. Like his cameraless photographs, "photograms," which are abstract and spatially confusing, this striking portrait challenges traditional modes of visual representation and comprehension.
