This photograph is part of a series of more than eight hundred images made by Goldin since the mid-1970s entitled Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a personal visual diary of the artist and her friends. The work originally took (and occasionally takes) the form of a fifty-minute slide show accompanied by music of the 1970s and 1980s.
