Memory Rendering of the Man on the Moon
In his Memory Renderings series, Muniz took as his starting point images etched in collective memory such as Neil Armstrong on the moon, the Kent State shootings, and Eddie Adams' photograph Vietnamese General Executing a Viet Cong. Redrawn from memory, without the aid of a reproduction, these images were then rephotographed and printed through a halftone screen. The memory-mediated image was thus recycled as a halftone print--which is how such images are dispersed into the world.
