Ionian Sea, Santa Cesarea
Sugimoto began his extensive series of seascapes in 1980, traveling with a large-format camera to oceans, seas, and lakes around the globe. Working at different times of day and under various atmospheric conditions from brilliant sunshine to blanketlike fog, he captured the elemental meeting of sea and sky in austere, mesmerizing images. In 1990 he began shooting seascapes at night. Sublimely subtle, these inky black pictures demand to be looked at slowly in order to discern the wavelets, starlight, and other details hovering just at the threshold of visibility.
