Burns achieved the selective focus seen here through a technique called "tilt-shift," which involves tilting and rotating the camera’s lens in relation to the picture plane to achieve a shallow depth of field. Once the province of technically adept analog photographers, tilt-shift became much more common in the digital era through its easy application via preprogrammed "filters."
