Landscape V

Not on view
Appelt explores the interrelationship of light, energy, and movement through photography and large-scale installations. She made this photograph, part of her Napoli-Roma series, from the window of a moving train as it traveled from Naples to Rome. The artist mounted her camera on a tripod, preset its focus to infinity, and released the shutter periodically during the ninety-minute trip. Although Appelt controlled the setup, the results were governed primarily by chance. Here, the elements of light, train speed, and the rapidly changing landscape produce an unpredictable combination of color, texture, and depth that recalls the painterly surface of an abstract canvas.
