[Union Cavalry Soldier, Seated, with Sword and Handgun]

Not on view

During the Civil War, the Union army purchased some 373,000 handguns, including more than 200,000 .36 caliber Navy revolvers manufactured by Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut. Seen here proudly removed from its holster by an unknown cavalryman, the Navy six-shooter was preferred by cavalry soldiers on the battlefield for its greater handiness than the heavier standard issue .44-caliber Colt Army revolver.
