Richard L. Cramer, Company I, Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry
Mathew B. Brady American, born Ireland
Not on view
This portrait on an "Illustrations of Camp Life" card mount is an example of Brady’s dedicated effort to record the physiognomies of the nation’s soldiers before they had seen battle. Richard Cramer wears fresh Federal-issue blue trousers, not the gray jacket and pants he wore when he and his regiment, the "Wolverines," began their journey to the District of Columbia. That dates the photograph later than June 20, 1861, when Cramer was mustered into service, and before the company’s departure for the battle of Bull Run in mid-July. Cramer paid thirty cents for his portrait, as noted on the reverse.
