Seated Baboon Figurine

Late Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

Baboon figurines are among the longest enduring form of art in ancient Egypt, dating back to the Predynastic Period and well into the First millennium and later. Baboons were adorers of the sun and associated with a few gods, predominantly with the god Thoth. The features of the baboon's prominent mane are delicately marked on this finely made figurine. A loop at the back suggests it was worn, probably with a string.
