Lear was a tireless traveller and prolific draftsman who visited Dalmatia and northern Greece many times. Here, he records the traditional slavic dress of women gathered to talk, noting that their distinctive shoes are called "L'Opanke" (Opanak). Ragusa (today Dubrovnik, Croatia), is a port city on the Dalmatian coast controlled by Venice until 1797. After Napoleon's fall it became part of the Austrian empire until 1918.
