Allegory of the Sea in a Strapwork Frame

Cornelis Bos Netherlandish
ca. 1554
Not on view
Design for an allegory of the sea, depicted inside a strapwork frame. The allegory consists of a sea view with a large male head at the left and a small depiction of Neptune in front of a large fish. A dolphin and a sinking ship are seen further in the background. The strapwork frame is characterized by two naked figures on either side of the scene. They are caught within the strapwork frame; an element typical for the Flemish grotesques as developed in the Southern Netherlands in the second quarter of the sixteenth century.
