In this woodland scene, sonorous shades of brown, gray, and purple evoke a fragile silence. Low russet foliage relieves the vertical lines of the trees, as a solitary figure approaches bearing a load, perhaps of sticks. The site has been identified as Savernake forest, Wiltshire. Poynter would pursue a successful career creating murals of religious and mythological subjects for some of London’s most prestigious spaces, but also produced evocative watercolors on a smaller scale, often for his own pleasure. In 1859 the artist was concluding academic studies in Paris under Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre.
