The prints in this volume are based on drawings and daguerrotypes that Ruskin made in Venice. Shortly after the publication of that author's "Stones of Venice," volume 1 in 1851, readers were offered the chance to buy sixteen additional folio sized plates issued in three sets. The size and range of printmaking techniques produced finer architectural detail than in illustrations issued with the related book. Here, those plates are bound in red morocco tooled with gold by Francis Bedford. In addition to the original paper set covers, the introduction and descriptive list, the binder added two portraits of Ruskin published in 1858 and 1880, plus five early etched states of plates 2, 6, 8 and 11. The volume ends with a Venetian subject not from "Examples of Architecture" but similar in character. The group must have been bound after Herkomer's 1880 portrait print.

44.84(1) first extra plate: "Portrait of Ruskin," stipple engraving on chine collé by Francis Holl after George Richmond; in plate: "Drawn by George Richmond / Engraved by Francis Holl / Published June 15, 1858 by Smith, Elder & Co., 65 Cornhill"; simulated signature of sitter in plate at lower right.
44.84(2) second extra plate: "Portrait of Ruskin," 1880, drawn and engraved in mezzotint by Hubert Herkomer; in plate lower right: "HH / 80" and a remarque of a seated figure of Justice who ties a blindfold over her eyes. Signed in graphite lower right: "Hubert Herkomer"; blindstamp of the Association of Printsellers at lower left with "IT" at center [Herkomer's related watercolor was shown at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1879 and is now at the National Portrait Gallery, London; also see the artist's graphite drawing in the Met's collection (2013.1121.2)].
