Subject of book Ballet Russe
Founded by Sergei Diaghilev in Paris in 1909, the Ballets Russes dance company (sometimes referred to in the singular) reinvigorated classical ballet with innovative productions featuring the work of avant-garde choreographers, composers, and designers. This souvenir program, produced for the company’s performances at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House in 1916, is illustrated by Léon Bakst, who designed the sets and costumes for many of the Ballets Russes’s early productions.
