Interior of an Opera House, Showing the Stage and the Boxes with Their Occupants

Willaeys French

Not on view

One of a series of French nineteenth-century fan leaves inspired by popular operas and composers, this design plays delightfully with different levels of historical reality. An audience from the 1840s wears fancy dress from the era of Louis XIII, two centuries before, as they watch an opera performance with Gothic Revival sets, while seated in a theater decorated in the neoclassical style. Most of the design is etched, with some stipple engraving added to lend tone to the faces.
