To aid the British army, the military engineer Sauthier drew this informative record of troop movements north and west of Manhattan in the fall of 1776. American forces are colored blue and British forces red. Following General William Howe’s occupation of Manhattan, the plan shows General George Washington’s Continental Army pushed to the island’s northern tip. Greatest attention is given to actions related to the Battle of White Plains, with British and Hessian landings between Mamaroneck and Pelham clearly marked. Across the Hudson, the capture of Fort Lee is noted, along with the retreat of Washington’s army into New Jersey, which would end with the famous crossing of the Delaware River.
