Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, decided to become an illustrator and printmaker, then worked as a clerk before entering the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1880. He became associated with the Century Magazine in 1881 and made several trips to southern states before traveling to Europe on the magazine's behalf. Here he represents wooden buildings on a hill at Lynchburg, Virginia with a slatted fence descending towards two men near a stream. Pennell created two versions of this print, with this smaller image published in New York Etching Club Catalogue, 1883. He etched the first larger version in 1882.
