Bogaert was born in Breda, but worked in Paris (from 1650s), where he died. In France, he known as 'Martin Desjardins'. Received at the Académie Royale de Peinture & de Sculpture in 1671.

Engraved in 1698 after a portrait painted in 1692; the statue is one of the captives executed by Desjardins for the monument on the Place des Victoires in Paris, 1682/85.
