Oliver Goldsmith's play "She Stoops to Conquer" was first performed in London in 1773. In this scene Mr. Hardcastle (played by Edward Shuter) stands at left and raises a hand in amazement as his wife (played by Jane Green) kneels and begs for her life. At right, Tony Lumkin (Mrs. Hardcastle's son and Mr. Hardcastle's stepson), played by John Quick, wears a jockey cap, boots and flowered waistcoat, holds a whip and points in amusement at the couple.
