Candlestick
Not on view
Visitors to international exhibitions in Europe and America were confronted with astonishing displays of Japanese artistic creativity and technical virtuosity. Meiji-period decorative arts, considered unrivaled in the quality of their craftsmanship, were sought after by Western collectors. This cast candlestick mimics a piece of bamboo, which is further embellished with a bamboo branch wrapped around the stem. Depictions of plants, flowers, vegetables delighted Moore, who incorporated patterns like this into his silverware compositions.
