Design for a Gilt Leather Panel

ca. 1660–70
Not on view
Design for the decorative pattern of a gilt leather panel with a wreath at center. The allover design can be divided in four parts along the vertical and horizontal axes, each containing a putto holding flowers and other types of vegetal objects in their hands. Strewn across the print are other loose motifs from the world of flora and fauna. They appear to have allegorical significance in this pattern, pertaining to the Four Seasons and Four Elements.

Prints of this kind were produced in the second half of the seventeenth century by manufacturers of gilt leather wall decorations to advertise their stock to potential customers. Some contain inscriptions on the verso that detail available color options and prices.
