Not on view

Reprint of a wood engraving originally published in a journal such as Harper's Weekly ca. 1870. Ulysses S. Grant is shown as a conquistador, with abolitionist Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) and Senator Charles Sumner (1851-1874) appearing at lower left dressed as natives. Refers to the effort led by Sumner to defeat Grant's proposed Santo Domingo Treaty of 1870, which would have annexed the Dominican Republic, then known by the name of its capital, Santo Domingo.
