Blacksmith's Shop, Near Hingham, Norfolk

Artist and engraver Walter Monteith Aikman American
After John Crome British

Not on view

A leader of the Norwich School (artists based in that Norfolk town who developed a distinct local style), Crome worked in oils, watercolors, and as a drawing master and etcher. This early 20th-century wood engraving reproduces an oil painting of ca. 1808, now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, centered on rustic buildings housing a blacksmithery. Created for the American market, the print demonstrates Crome's long-lived popularity on both sides of the Atlantic.
