Portrait of a Man
Although his identity is unknown today, the sitter’s confident stance, with hat doffed and arm akimbo, conveys the self-assured nonchalance of an elite man. The flounced sleeves and multicolored ribbons dangling from the sitter's waistcoat indicate the increasing influence of French fashion in the Netherlands in the 1650s, resulting in the tentative relaxation of local strictures against colorful dress.
