Jurōjin
Kano Tanshin Moromichi Japanese
Jurōjin, said to have lived in China at the end of the eleventh century, is shown as an old man with a long beard. He carries a staff (in some representations this is replaced by a scroll) and is accompanied by a deer. In Japan he is numbered as one of seven lucky gods. Emblematic of felicitous longevity, his image is especially appropriate in celebration of the new year.
