In connection with, or soon after, his first solo exhibition at the principal meeting place of the Barcelona avant-garde, the bohemian tavern Els Quatre Gats, Picasso made a set of small caricatures of the prominent members of the informal club. Pichot (1872–1925) was nine years older than Picasso but a good friend nonetheless. A printmaker and illustrator, he exhibited at Els Quatre Gats immediately following Picasso's one-man show there in 1899; soon after, in October 1900, both he and Picasso travelled with Carles Casagemas to Paris. In 1908 Pichot married Germaine (Laure Gargallo), a former lover of Casagemas's and Picasso's.
