Although Belgian, van de Velde founded an Arts and Crafts school in Weimar, Germany that was strongly influenced by the principles of the English design reformer William Morris. It was called the Bauhaus, and under the directorship of van de Velde's successor, Walter Gropius, it became the leading exponent of international modernism in the 1920s.
