In 1975, Samaras began a drawing series titled Matrix (the Latin root of which means mother and womb) upon hearing news over the phone of his mother’s death in Greece. The Matrix drawings were executed on black paper in glossy graphite and, occasionally, metallic pencil. They depict the artist’s hands (one holds a telephone cord), honeycomb patterns (shown here), and drafting utensils—French curves and protractors—combined with stenciled words and phrases such as "Do Not Forget," "Speechless," and, "Pretend."
