Vase

Designer Michael Powolny Austrian
ca. 1906
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 912
Powolny was a founder of the Wiener Keramik workshop in Vienna, which became part of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1907. Much of his work was traditional; he created pottery figurines that could be mistaken for those made in the eighteenth century. In functional pieces such as this vase, however, he adopted the geometric forms and patterning seen in works by the Wiener Werkstätte.
