MAP III by Bertil Vallien is one in a series of large sand-cast glass reliefs. It was cast in sand using techniques Vallien developed to give form to an imagination drawn to the mythic in both scale and theme. The Map series expresses the artist's concerns with the metaphysical dimensions of journeys. He creates art that symbolizes a self-contained world, reminiscent of the early experiments of the Surrealists.

Vallien's career began as a designer for the Swedish glassworks Kosta Boda. For the past twenty years, he has created original designs for the glass studio; at the same time, the environment and technical assistance in the factory setting has allowed him to create his highly complex one-of-a-kind sculptures.
