Number One
Esteban Vicente American, born Spain
Not on view
Vicente studied in Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris before immigrating in 1936 to the United States, where he eventually became associated with the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. Vicente’s art remained closely tied to European sensibilities, and his mature style was completely abstract. A painter by vocation, he practiced collage while teaching in California in 1949–50, and his subsequent work, such as Number One, imitates the collage technique. Like Willem de Kooning, Vicente enjoyed transferring newsprint to his surfaces in order to add texture.
