Considered one of the leading voices within postwar American ceramics, Betty Woodman started her career as a functional potter, but soon shifted her emphasis towards more inventive, conceptual and non-functional ceramic forms. Applying her strong interest in, and deep knowledge of, the history of ceramics, she became renowned for her colorful, witty, eccentric shapes and exaggerated silhouettes. She drew inspiration from sources as diverse as Greek, Etruscan and Asian vessels and applied bold surface treatments that took their cue from the patterns and color schemes of painters such as Matisse and the formal visual vocabulary of Cubism.
