Haas is known for his attention to architectural detail and for his interest in the historical buildings of New York City. In this particular drawing, a bird’s-eye view, the mixture of two centuries of architecture visible in Lower Manhattan is rendered with a delicate and painstaking technique to great effect. Haas likely began making the work as an artist in residence in the first year of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace: Worldviews program, from 1997–98. Worldviews provided artists with a studio on the 93rd floor of the former World Trade Center until they were destroyed in 2001. The drawing therefore not only provides an excellent example of Haas’s technique, but also documents a vista that no longer exists.
