Designer Richard Riemerschmid German
ca. 1898
Not on view
Munich-born Riemerschmidt was one of the leading designers of the functionalist wing of the Jugendstil movement, the German version of Art Nouveau. Trained as a painter, he turned to architecture and furniture design by 1895 and showed both furniture and paintings at the 1897 Munich Glasplast exhibition. He was interested in simple, functional forms and clarity of construction while also suggesting the asymmetry and vegetal style of contemporary French design.
