Deff

Algerian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Deff may refer to a round frame drum but this one from Algeria is a square wood frame covered with goat skin. It is played by both men and women and influenced the form of a similar instrument, the adufe, found in Portugal.
